Tutorial: How to paint watermelon in watercolour

Supplies you will need

• Watercolour paper
• Watercolour paints
• Brushes – larger will be more fun!
• Water jars
• Paper towels or cloth

Colours

• Sap Green
• Winsor Red Deep
• Mars Black

All you need is three colours – choose your best red for this. You want bold, bright watercolour paints.

Paint watermelon in watercolour – step by step

1. Mix up the red with a large amount of water to make a very wet mixture. Load up your brush and paint a triangle on the paper, with a rounded bottom edge.
2. While it’s still wet, load up in a thick red paint and touch it to the triangle shape, all around the long edges. Avoid the curved bottom edge. Allow to blend out naturally, bleeding towards the base.
3. It should be most concentrated in the tip of the triangle. Keep adding more red paint to get a bold effect.
4. To create the rind, mix up the green and add a curved line along the base. Make sure not to touch the red paint, or the colours will bleed together to make a mucky brown. Add small spots of black paint to create variation and texture.
5. Once the watermelon is dry, use a smaller brush to create the pips with black paint. Make them tear-drop shaped and spread around randomly, concentrated towards the tip.
