How to paint watercolour figs

Figs are such a great fruit for watercolour painting, because they have great strong colours and texture. The outside skins have a soft striped purple appearance, and the seed-filled insides have a great fine texture.

They’re also extremely easy for beginners to paint in watercolour. Grab your supplies and let’s get painting!

How to paint figs in watercolour step-by-step

  1. Mix up a light purple value and create a large round shape.
  2. While it’s still wet, add a green tip and blend down into the ‘shoulders’ of the fruit. Pull the green colour down into the fruit in curved lines to create a three-dimensional shape.
  3. Using a darker purple, create a shadow around the bottom of the fruit, and pull some paint up between the green lines, to create a mottled, striped effect. Allow to blend and dry naturally.
  4. Add a darker line to the top of the fruit.
  5. To paint a cut fig shape, mix up a light yellow and paint the same shape by the side, allowing the colours to mix if you like.
  6. Grab your purple paint on a fine brush and run it around the shape of the cut fig to create the skin, allowing it to blend out.
  7. When this is dry, you can add the red seeds. Using a thin brush and a create little circles or swirls in the centre, leaving lots of white space. Drop in darker sections of a deep red colour for contrast.

Now your figs are complete! Build this out into a bigger composition across your page for an easy fruit painting.
