Plums are the perfect fruits for painting in watercolour – they’re a deep mix of blues and purples. This easy tutorial will teach you how to paint plums with a loose watercolour style in just 10 minutes!
What you will need
- Watercolour paper
- Watercolour paints
- Brushes
- Water jars
- Paper towels
Colours
- Prussian Blue
- Dioxazine Purple
- Opera Rose
All the paints I use are from Winsor and Newton, but you don’t need these exact shades. I’m using blues, purples and pinks, but you can paint plums in peach, orange or even green.
Painting watercolour plums – step by step
- Create a really light, watery mix of your pink and purple colours, then create a shape with a rounded base.
- With a different brush, add darker and thicker paint along one edge and the base, letting it blend out naturally. This will create a slight shadow and make your plums look rounded.
- Add a second shape to the side, leaving a little white space beteween them. Let the shapes touch at the bottom.
- Repeat by adding a darker line of paint again on the right side and along the bottom.
- Add drops of pink and blue in places and allow to blend out to create fun colours.
